The Nature Conservancy is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive. Founded in the U.S. through grassroots action in 1951, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has grown to become one of the most effective and wide-reaching environmental organizations in the world. Thanks to more than a million members and the dedicated efforts of our diverse staff and over 400 scientists, we impact conservation in 81 countries and territories: 40 by direct conservation impact and 41 through partners.
The Nature Conservancy’s priority in Tanzania is to strengthen local resource management and promote sustainable projects that help people live in balance with their environment. We are pursuing innovative approaches that link population, consumption and the environment. The project, Tuungane (Kiswahili for “Let’s Unite”) located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika is addressing community resource management, sustainable livelihoods and the health needs of underserved communities who depend on the areas natural resources. We also work in the Northern Tanzania rangelands, to assist pastoralist communities conserve their natural resources by slowing unsustainable agricultural expansion and instead promote sustainable land-use practices.
Our projects in Tanzania seek to adapt proven conservation strategies that meet the needs of the diverse communities with which we work.
