It is the first Monday in May, which can only mean one thing: the Met Gala is upon us. For the uninitiated, this is Anna Wintour’s annual star-studded fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which she has helmed since 1995.
The theme this year is ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’, which sounds rather vague, but describes an exhibition of 250 flora-inspired pieces from the Met’s permanent collection which are too fragile to be worn again (take note, Kim Kardashian, who controversially borrowed a delicate Bob Mackie gown worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 for the 2022 gala).
The dress code usually relates to the exhibition, and this year’s guests – among them Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Jeff Bezos and his fiancee Lauren Sanchez – were inspired by ‘The Garden in Time’, a brief that offers designers and stylists a relative carte blanche, although it’s said that each look must meet Wintour’s approval.
The result? Proof, no matter how many times you’ve watched The Devil Wears Prada, that florals for spring truly can be groundbreaking. Scroll on to see the most memorable looks from the night…
