Position: Plant Nursery/Reforestation and Farm Manager
Location: Arusha, Tanzania

Organization: Aga Khan University (AKU)

Job Overview:
The incumbent will have a crucial role in ensuring the smooth running of the nursery, reforestation, and farm-related activities to meet the long-term objective of environmental sustainability at the Arusha site and the greening initiatives of AKU. Responsibilities include improving the microclimate, protecting against soil erosion, enhancing the watershed, rejuvenating the land, and maintaining productivity.

Areas of Responsibilities:

  1. Schedule tree stumping and pruning.
  2. Increase the reforestation of the Arusha land.
  3. Provide support and direction on harvesting and pulping operations.
  4. Grow saplings in the nursery.
  5. Provide directions to the nursery staff.
  6. Support the grading and sale of coffee beans.
  7. Schedule and monitor the planting of trees.
  8. Utilize demo plots effectively.
  9. Direct on demo plots technologies and introduce new innovations.
  10. Train community members and other stakeholders on best practices.
  11. Increase farming activities and crop production.
  12. Direct crop planting and implement fertigation for different crops.
  13. Manage irrigation systems, including sprinklers, drip, and furrow methods.
  14. Ensure smooth running of farming equipment, including developing a regular maintenance schedule.
  15. Manage resources, including fuel consumption.
  16. Maintain good landscaping and ensure staff training and rotation.
  17. Liaise and work closely with landscaping staff to ensure grass is regularly cut and irrigated.
  18. Oversee the greening of the COC surroundings.
  19. Ensure coffee plantations and other crops are well maintained, working with the coffee team leader for support.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor/Master of Science Degree related to the field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing a plant nursery, reforestation, and agriculture.
  • Experience in irrigation systems and familiarity with a wide range of indigenous trees and tree-growing processes.
  • Strong understanding of environmental sustainability and conservation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally.
  • Self-motivated, versatile, and adaptable to different cultures and people, with an open-minded approach.
  • Strong team leadership and collaborative skills.
  • Fluency in both Kiswahili and English, with professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to prioritize, develop work schedules, implement plans, and monitor progress towards goals.
  • Ability to make clear and timely decisions, with attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
