SOUR MILK CAUSES RAMPANT SHANGOMBO TOOTH DECAY
By Lovemore Sondashi
Sour milk mixed with Nshima is traditionally enjoyed by people of Western and Southern Provinces of Zambia.
With the ongoing screening of patients by Zambia Flying Doctors Service in Shangombo District in Western Province, a prevalence of dental caries has been observed, citing sour milk intake as the major contributor.
ZFDS team lead, Dr. Chiteta Lumayi says sour milk is acidic in nature and that, coupled with poor oral hygiene leads to caries.
Dr. Lumayi said so far over 100 patients with dental challenges have been seen at three facilities that have been serviced.
