Dar es Salaam. Various games spiced up the Aga Khan Schools annual sports day held on Tuesday at the schools grounds.

The cherished event aimed at honing talents beyond the conventional classroom setting. At the school, students who actively participated in the event were honoured with awards, emphasizing the integral role sports play in the school’s curriculum.

Speaking during the event, Aga Khan Nursery and Primary Head of School, Blandina Duwe, highlighted the educational significance of the annual sports day.

“Sports for children are an integral part of the education we provide here at school. We believe that children learn various skills through sports, for example, when they participate in games, they learn problem-solving skills because some of the games organized are puzzles.

“But they also learn the ability to cooperate with others, express themselves, and work collaboratively,” said Duwe.

She further elaborated on the event’s unique approach to promoting tourism, whereby students were assigned to different teams named after wildlife and regions of Tanzania, such as Elephant, Rhino, Giraffe, Ruvuma, Rufiji, among others.

The event featured a variety of sports activities, including relays involving students from different age groups.

One of the Aga Khan Secondary School students, Fabiana Alves, expressed her enthusiasm for the annual sports day, citing personal growth and open-mindedness fostered through participation.

“Instead of doing this every year, I think we should do it every single month to become more physically fit,” she suggested.

Similarly, Akili Chiume, a class IB2 (Form Six student) who competed in the 100 meters relay, said sports activities push them mentally because they have to push through doubts and discomfort.

“The annual sports day perfectly relates to everything else in life. Anything that becomes difficult or hard to manage, your mental health improves because of exercise, and it will help you get through them quicker,” he said.

The Annual Sports Day serves as a platform for students to showcase their talents and celebrate diversity outside the confines of the classroom, reinforcing the school’s commitment to holistic education and student development.
