The Met Gala is a highlight of the fashion calendar. Held on the first Monday in May, it’s famously the night where celebrities, fashion editors and models can have the most fun with their outfits. The dress code each year is dictated by the corresponding exhibition opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art – some years this may be dedicated to the work of one designer, other years have a broader theme.
Attendees usually use the excuse as a chance to dress up. They abide by the ‘go big or go home’ mantra, and outfits are daring, over-the-top and tonnes of fun.
Since the Gala began in 1948, we’ve seen many memorable looks. From Katy Perry’s take on Catholicism and Rihanna in a dress that resembled an omelette, to Lauren Hutton dodging the theatrics in a jumper and Princess Diana in a Dior negligee – there’s almost nothing we haven’t seen at this event.
Scroll through our gallery for a dose of red carpet fashion escapism in the run up to this year’s Met Gala…
