Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday, March 25, apologised to former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, for what he called “our political madness that made us insult you”.
Mr Gachagua said: “In retrospect, I now agree that our political manners went to the dogs where we even abandoned our cultural dictates and insulted our community matriarch”.
Speaking on Kameme TV’s morning show, DP Gachagua said the situation troubles him a lot “to the extent that it haunts me a lot and makes me wonder in my private life how we got to a point where we are attacking each other like rabid dogs”.
He said he wanted to offer a sincere apology to Mama Ngina, “whom we should not have even mentioned by name in the first place because of the place she occupies in the politics and culture of our community”.

He said the degeneration of political discipline to the point where “those of us who were in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) exchanged uncouth words with our brothers and sisters in the community who supported Azimio was gross”.
Sounding remorseful, Mr Gachagua may have been recalling how a senior government official went public with unprintable statements against Mama Ngina, even threatening to show up at her gates in Gatundu South and urinate on them to show his disgust for her,
Some believe that hired political thugs raided her Nortlands estate in Kiambu County on March 27, 2023 and apart from stealing sheep and trees, burnt parts of the land and attempted to divide plots among themselves.
Mr Gachagua said, “These are acts we should never have to experience again and since our mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, is an understanding soul with the wisdom to match, I know she will accept our apology”.
On making peace with her son Mr Kenyatta, Gachagua said “we are going to have a goat eating ceremony in the near future”.
He said he was in the process of reaching out to all the different voices in the Mt Kenya region “and at the appropriate time we will meet and make peace”.
He said what is important now is to ensure that “Mt Kenya speaks with one voice ahead of 2027 and into the 2032 succession”.
He said he was the one responsible for leading the Mt Kenya electorate into the two political events.
