“I remember him getting closer and closer and, all of a sudden, he was wedged in between me and the wall. I still remember the smell of… where his groin was leaned in against me. And I just remember I was very still,” he says. “People would come into the auditorium and talk to him about how much they loved him. And I’m like, ‘What is happening right now?’ I couldn’t look, I couldn’t move.”
He adds: “He was in this cove with me, and there with his groin rubbing against [me].” De Lillo pauses to touch his clavicle. “Right here. In the dark, with families in the room, and he’s laughing at the pantomime and I’m just there – frozen.”
De Lillo cannot tell how long the incident lasted, but says he was traumatised by it. “That day just took so much away from me, from who I was, what I believed, how I viewed celebrities, how I wondered if this is an industry I wanted to be part of.”
De Lillo, now 39, is one of 10 men who have come forward to publicly accuse Spacey of inappropriate behaviour in an apparent pattern spanning five decades, from when the actor was at school to the height of his powers on Netflix’s House of Cards.
They include an actor who appeared in an Old Vic production of Sweet Bird of Youth in 2013, who claimed that Spacey groped him in public at an after-party held at the Savoy. “He put his left hand down by my bum and he stuck his middle finger as far up me as possible,” said the actor, named Ruari. “I just totally froze. He pulled me in closer and in my ear he whispered, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ He did that and just like a shark moved straight through into ‘Kevin mode’ at a press night, so went and took pictures.”
A young British actor who took part in a workshop at the Old Vic alleged that Spacey pretended to be interested in the work “but actually he was just working his way around the room putting his arm around what seemed to be the most handsome guys in the space”. He claimed that Spacey approached him and “I just felt his body up against my body. I think his penis was against my leg. It was horrible.”
A former Marine who hoped to forge an acting career claimed that Spacey took him to a cinema screening of Saving Private Ryan and began masturbating during the opening scene. “It was the first 20 minutes of the invasion of Normandy. It’s shockingly horrific – there’s a guy picking up his arm and people are on fire, people are just dying in the most horrible ways you can die. All of a sudden there’s some activity happening next to me, I glance over and Kevin is just pleasuring himself.”
During his time starring in House of Cards, Spacey is alleged to have groped a young actor who played a member of his security detail. The man claimed: “We’re on the other side of the set, just me and him. I leaned in because he was saying something. I felt something tickle me right below my zipper. I look down and see it’s his finger. His hand touched my penis. It wasn’t like us playing around in the locker room, a little joke or a little tap, it was sexual. I was inappropriately touched on set at work. He just had these little dead eyes staring at me.”
Spacey has not directly addressed the new allegations. He said on Thursday that he had “repeatedly requested that Channel 4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters. Channel 4 has refused on the basis that they feel that asking for a response in 7 days to new, anonymized and non-specific allegations is a “fair opportunity” for me to refute any allegations made against me”.
