Dar es Salaam. A total of 108 disciplines will be contested in this year’s Tanzania National Club Swimming Championships scheduled to take place at Masaki’s International School of Tanganyika (IST)’s swimming pool from April 20 to 21.

Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) Secretary-General Inviolata Itatiro said they had decided to include this number of events to assess swimmers’ talents and strengths before selecting some of them for the national team ahead of various international competitions.

She said swimmers would compete in 70 disciplines on day one before compete in the remaining disciplines on day two.

According to Inviolata, swimmers are required to compete in a maximum of five (5) individual events and three (3) for relays. She said that the event is open to all swimmers registered by TSA for the 2023/2024 season and that they are also expecting to see Zanzibar’s swimmers competing in the championships.

She also said the championships are open to all foreign swimmers who have met the qualifying time standards and have been cleared by their federations through providing clearance letters and proper travel credentials.

“Qualifying times must be achieved between August 1 and March 2024.” said Inviolata.

She further stated that the deadline for clubs to confirm participation is on April 5, at 11 pm, after which no text or verbal entries will be entertained.

The event’s programme indicates that a total of 70 events will be held on the first day, with the rest taking place the following day.

According to her, swimmers will need to demonstrate their strength during the two-day event.

“This competition is very important for swimmers because it will be used to select competitors from all age groups to form the national team. So, the swimmers will have to strive for that,” she said.

Inviolata explained that the competition is a qualifying event that will also serve as a selection process for swimmers who will compete in various international events.
