Mousinho, 37, is in his first managerial role and will be hoping to replicate the success of Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, also 37, in the Championship next season. Ipswich are currently top of the second tier in their first season since promotion from League One.
Portsmouth have spent the last seven seasons in League One and have stabilised as a club since the 2017 takeover by Michael Eisner, the former Disney chief executive.
After winning the FA Cup under Harry Redknapp in 2008 and playing in the following season’s Uefa Cup, Portsmouth were relegated from the Premier League amid financial chaos in 2010.
It then took them only three seasons to plummet from the Championship to League Two, before returning to League One in 2017.
Thousands of their fans stormed the pitch after the final whistle on Tuesday, with flares set off and the players raised onto the shoulders of supporters.
The celebrations then continued into Portsmouth itself, where members of the first-team squad were filmed enjoying themselves in bars.
The home side had twice fallen behind against Barnsley but eventually came back to win thanks to goals from Colby Bishop, in the 83rd minute, and Conor Shaughnessy, in the 89th minute. Portsmouth have topped the League One table throughout the calendar year.
