Michael van Gerwen’s earlier defeat means Luke Humphries – who we will be seeing next against Nathan Aspinall – will end the night top of the table.

Finishing in the top four is what this league phase is all about, but how important is that top spot?

Well, the league champion has gone on to lift the trophy in 12 of the 19 previous editions of the Premier League.

Phil Taylor did so six times, Van Gerwen five and Glen Durrant once, with Durrant’s 2020 victory the most recent instance.

The past three league winners all failed to lift the big prize; Van Gerwen in 2021, Jonny Clayton in 2022 and Gerwyn Price last year.
