Dar es Salaam. Football heavyweights, Simba SC, have now shifted focus to the Mainland Tanzania Premier League after being edged out of the CRDB Federation Cup.
Simba suffered a 6-5 defeat on penalties to Mashujaa FC of Kigoma at the Lake Tanganyika Stadium and their dream of winning the title was shattered.
Simba’s last triumph in the Federation Cup was in the 2020/2021 season after beating their bitter rivals, Yanga 1-0. Simba’s goal was scored by Taddeo Lwanga in the match played at the Lake Tanganyika Stadium in Kigoma on July 25, 2021.
Apart from the CRDB Federation Cup, so far Simba have missed the CAF Champions League title and the Mapinduzi Cup, holding only the Community Shield.
Simba Information Officer Ahmed Ally admitted that their elimination from the competition was painful and none of Simba member or fan would be happy with it.
“We are really not happy with the result, we are very much disappointed and we are very sorry with it, but we have to accept it as part of the game.
“Our task ahead is the match against Ihefu FC, scheduled to take place at the Liti Stadium in Singida and we will have to win it in order to console our fans. This is because the Mainland Tanzania Premier League is now the only competition that we can win its title,” said Ally.
Currently, Simba sit third in the league log with 45 points from 21 matches. Their rivals, Yanga, lead the table with 52 points from 21 matches, while Azam FC are second with 47 points from 21 games.
Positioned where they are, Simba must raise their game to secure the Premiership title dominated by Yanga for two consecutive seasons.
